JPG to SVG for Cricut

JPG files are compressed, which leaves faint blocks and halos around edges. CutVector filters that noise before tracing so you get smooth shapes instead of hundreds of tiny specks. Cricut Design Space imports SVG layers as separate colors you can attach, weld and cut on vinyl, HTV, cardstock or Infusible Ink.

Text saved as JPG picks up grey halos around each letter. CutVector’s automatic threshold puts the edge exactly between ink and paper. The traced “Hello” ends up as a handful of closed paths instead of the hundreds of fragments Design Space’s own trace tends to create. That means fewer weeding surprises on small text.

How to convert JPG to SVG for Cricut

  1. Open CutVector and drop your JPG file (or several at once). Raise “Ignore specks” to 6–10 px for heavily compressed JPGs, phone photos of sketches, or screenshots.
  2. Pick the Cricut cut preset — clean layered shapes for vinyl & htv.
  3. Switch to the Cut lines view and check every outline is where you expect. Adjust Smoothing, Ignore specks or Min hole area if needed.
  4. Set Output width to the finished size, then download the SVG.
  5. In Design Space choose Upload → Upload Image → browse to the SVG. Each color arrives as its own layer; click “Add to Canvas” and resize if needed.

FAQ

My JPG text has fuzzy edges in Design Space — will this fix it?

Yes. Design Space’s own image trace keeps the fuzz; CutVector smooths it into clean curves before you upload.

What is the smallest JPG text that still cuts cleanly?

On vinyl, letters about 8 mm tall with strokes over 1 mm cut and weed reliably. Smaller text should be enlarged in the source image before tracing.

Why are my letters cutting as separate pieces on Cricut?

Script letters that touch must be welded. Turn on Weld in CutVector before exporting, or select the layer in Design Space and click Weld.

What size will the SVG be in Design Space?

Design Space reads the millimeter size written in the file, so it imports at the Output width you chose. You can still resize on the canvas.

Why does my JPG produce lots of tiny dots?

Those are JPEG compression artifacts. Increase “Ignore specks” and “Min hole area”; both remove fragments that are too small to weed or cut anyway.

Can I convert a photo taken with my phone?

Yes, if it is a high-contrast drawing or print photographed in even light. Fill the frame, avoid shadows, and use a single-color preset with automatic threshold.
