JPG to SVG for Etsy cut-file sellers
JPG files are compressed, which leaves faint blocks and halos around edges. CutVector filters that noise before tracing so you get smooth shapes instead of hundreds of tiny specks. Selling cut files on Etsy means one design has to work in Cricut, Silhouette, Glowforge and LightBurn. CutVector exports SVG, DXF and PDF from the same trace so your bundle opens everywhere.

Gradients posterize into flat bands of color. That can be a style choice, but say so in your listing photos. The gradient becomes concentric color bands plus a solid yellow center. Use this look deliberately, and show the result in your listing photos.
How to convert JPG to SVG for Etsy cut-file sellers
- Open CutVector and drop your JPG file (or several at once). Raise “Ignore specks” to 6–10 px for heavily compressed JPGs, phone photos of sketches, or screenshots.
- Pick the Cricut cut preset — clean layered shapes for vinyl & htv.
- Switch to the Cut lines view and check every outline is where you expect. Adjust Smoothing, Ignore specks or Min hole area if needed.
- Set Output width to the finished size, then download the SVG.
- Use Batch ZIP to export every design as SVG, DXF and PDF at once, then upload the ZIP as your listing’s digital file.

FAQ
Can I sell photo-based designs?
Only if you took the photo or licensed it for commercial use, and set expectations: traced photos become flat color shapes, not photo-real images.
Can buyers recolor the bands in their software?
Yes. Each color is its own layer in the SVG, so buyers can change or hide any band in Design Space or Silhouette Studio.
Can I sell files I make with CutVector?
Yes — the output is yours, provided the source image is yours or licensed for resale. Converting someone else’s design does not give you the right to sell it.
Which formats should an Etsy cut-file bundle include?
SVG (Cricut, Glowforge), DXF (Silhouette Basic, LightBurn) and PDF covers nearly every buyer. Many sellers add a PNG preview too.
Why does my JPG produce lots of tiny dots?
Those are JPEG compression artifacts. Increase “Ignore specks” and “Min hole area”; both remove fragments that are too small to weed or cut anyway.
Can I convert a photo taken with my phone?
Yes, if it is a high-contrast drawing or print photographed in even light. Fill the frame, avoid shadows, and use a single-color preset with automatic threshold.
