PNG to SVG for Etsy cut-file sellers

PNG is the friendliest input for tracing: lossless pixels, crisp edges and often a transparent background, so the outline CutVector finds is exactly the outline you drew. Selling cut files on Etsy means one design has to work in Cricut, Silhouette, Glowforge and LightBurn. CutVector exports SVG, DXF and PDF from the same trace so your bundle opens everywhere.

Original hand-drawn marks are exactly what Etsy shoppers want — and what you have the rights to sell. A stroke drawn with a marker becomes one closed, smooth shape buyers can cut immediately. Keep your scan as evidence of authorship.

How to convert PNG to SVG for Etsy cut-file sellers

  1. Open CutVector and drop your PNG file (or several at once). If your PNG has a transparent background, leave it — CutVector flattens transparency to white and ignores it automatically.
  2. Pick the Cricut cut preset — clean layered shapes for vinyl & htv.
  3. Switch to the Cut lines view and check every outline is where you expect. Adjust Smoothing, Ignore specks or Min hole area if needed.
  4. Set Output width to the finished size, then download the SVG.
  5. Use Batch ZIP to export every design as SVG, DXF and PDF at once, then upload the ZIP as your listing’s digital file.

FAQ

Is it OK to sell SVGs of my own drawings on Etsy?

Yes. Your drawings are yours; CutVector just converts them. Keep your original sketch files as proof of authorship.

Should I include a commercial-use license with my Etsy files?

Yes, state clearly what buyers may do (personal use only, or small-batch commercial) in your listing and in a readme inside the ZIP.

Can I sell files I make with CutVector?

Yes — the output is yours, provided the source image is yours or licensed for resale. Converting someone else’s design does not give you the right to sell it.

Which formats should an Etsy cut-file bundle include?

SVG (Cricut, Glowforge), DXF (Silhouette Basic, LightBurn) and PDF covers nearly every buyer. Many sellers add a PNG preview too.

Does a transparent PNG background matter?

No. Transparent pixels are treated as empty space, so only your artwork becomes cut paths. You never get a rectangle around the design.

What resolution should my PNG be?

Aim for at least 800 px on the long side. Small PNGs (under 300 px) trace with wobbly edges because there are too few pixels to describe a smooth curve.
